Birch Allee

Birch Allee

Found this in my archives, taken with my N80 on film about 6 years ago. (Can't remember if it was slide or negative film but was scanned on a Nikon film scanner.) The location was the gardens at the Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, Ohio, the country estate built by F.A. Seiberling, the founder of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. It's confusing because the name of the Tudor Revival manor is not someone's name but actually the Old English words for "stone hewn." The sprawling grounds includes impressive gardens, including the birch allee shown here. A National Historic Landmark, the home and gardens are open seasonally to the public. As my brother commented when we toured the home, it's like a scaled-down version of the Biltmore House.

  • I always think of pollution history when Ohio gets mentioned and I guess the creators of the Estate and this delightful allee played their part in that . . but things have changed even if they still have ways to go.
